Canon EOS-1D X And EOS 5D Mark III Get Camera Of The Year Awards

Camera of the year

Both the Canon EOS-1D X (specs & price) and the Canon EOS 5D Mark III (specs & price) got a camera of the year award.

Digitalcamerainfo chose the EOS-1D X as the camera of the year, because:

While there were only a couple high-end cameras brought to market in 2011, this year saw the eventual release of some incredible full-frame models from each of the major players. With some fantastic mid-range bodies also seeing the light of day, the Canon 1D X had stiff competition for our top spot once it finally was released to the public. Despite the delay, the 1D X bested all comers in our lab tests, producing the highest overall score of the year. While it's certainly too big, too expensive, and simply too much for most people, the Canon 1D X is, hands-down, the best camera from 2012

Scott Bourne and the staff at photofocus chose the EOS 5D Mark III as the camera of the year:

This year our team tested many cameras and one really stood out. It was the Canon 5D MK III. [...] The 5D MK III is fast both in response time and frames-per-second (up to 6 fps.) It has much better chromatic aberration correction and it’s low-light performance is second to none. It has up to seven frame HDR/bracketing.

The biggest improvement in the 5D MK III is in the auto focus. The camera’s 61-point AF system has 41 cross-type sensors and is miles ahead of its competition and only a hair slower than its big brother the Canon 1DX which in my opinion, has the best DSLR AF system in the world. [...]

Ultimately for our team, the selection boiled down to amazing low-light performance, super fast and accurate AF, premium build quality, and incredible DSLR film capabilities. If we had a nit it’s the price, but nothing is perfect.

New Canon EOS-1D X Firmware Released

ephotozine reviewed Canon’s professional flagship, the Canon EOS-1D X (price & specs). Highly weather-sealed body, an advanced AF system, plenty of controls, outstanding low light performance. This toy has everything a professional photographer may wish. In the verdict they write:

If you’re looking for the ultimate in speed, image quality, and performance, as well as exceptional low light performance then the Canon EOS 1D X certainly delivers in abundance. With extremely high ISO settings available it’s possible to shoot in low light situations hand-held where you would normally have to setup a tripod and timer, as long as you don’t mind using these higher ISO settings.

[...]

The Canon EOS 1D X gives the best low light high ISO performance of any full frame Digital SLR yet! One of the biggest negatives about this camera is the price, with the Canon EOS 1D X being one of the most expensive full frame Digital SLRs available, however, for those seeking the ultimate in speed, and low light performance, the price will be justified, assuming you have the budget for it.

They list the following pros:

  • Exceptional high ISO performance
  • Excellent image quality
  • 2 year warranty offered on Canon Pro bodies
  • Extremely solid build quality
  • Large, bright optical viewfinder
  • Fastest shooting full frame DSLR available
  • Large bright optical viewfinder
  • Great 3.2inch screen
  • High speed focus

and cons:

  • Size, Weight
  • Expense (Nikon D4 cheaper)
  • Lacks in camera HDR of following models

The EOS-1D X got a “highly recommended” rating. Canon EOS-1D X price check: Amazon, B&H, Adorama, Canon USA, J&R, Digitalrev, eBay

New Firmware For Canon EOS-1D X Underway?

Specs of the firmware 1.2.1 showed up at Canon Rumors. See at the end of the post.

Danke/thank you Heinz!

This comes from a discussion on dslr-forum.de. A user sent in his Canon EOS-1D X (price & specs) (to CPS) and got it back with a new firmware version, that's 1.2.1 (1.1.1 is the current official version). Then he called Canon service and was told it is a firmware version that is reserved to service and that there are no information about it in the Internet. It delivers some fixes and overall improvements. There are no major changes and minimal difference to release 1.1.1. At least the user who sent in the EOS-1D X has not noticed any changes so far.

The EOS-1D X was sent in for the purpose of fine-tuning the auto focus (he sent in the 1D X and the EF 70-200 2.8 IS II, 1.4x III and 2.0x III extenders). AF is much more snappy now, he writes, but that's plausibly due to the fine-tuned AF.

Here the specs as they are reported on CR:

Canon EOS-1D X Firmware 1.2.1

Release of New Firmware Version 1.2.1, firmware incorporating disablement (operational error prevention) of the Image Size selection button

We are releasing firmware version 1.2.1 for EOS -1D X for service prior to the Web announcement. We are planning to make this firmware available on the Web for download in mid-January 2013.

This firmware update is to improve operational function in response from several professional

photographers that the Image Selection button was pressed without realizing and the image size had been changed. Also, this firmware incorporates quality issue fixes that have been reported from the market.

1. Details of Functional Improvements and Fixes

1-1. The function to disable the Image Size selection button is added.

1-2. Fixes Err 70 and Err 80 which may occur depending on the camera settings, shooting scenes, or the timing of releases. Also, some complained camera freeze when Err 80 occurred.

The above mentioned (1-2) phenomenon occur in very rare instances. In addition with the firmware update for 1-1, the fixes for these phenomena have been incorporated.

a) Err 70

In customization of operational buttons, there were errors in operational program for the exposure level display in the viewfinder when the Main Dial is set to change the aperture value in Manual mode, and may cause Err 70.

b) Err 80

Err 80 may occur depending on the distance to the subject, shooting scenes, or the timing of metering.

This phenomenon occurs in very rare instances due to the error in operational program for metering when shooting a subject at a distance with telephoto lenses with focal lengths of 300 mm or 400 mm.

Center-Point AF Not Working On f/8 On Some Canon EOS-1D X

Center-Point AF Not Working

As most of you know, Canon released a firmware update for the Canon EOS-1D X that enabled the highly sensitive auto-focus center-point to be used with apertures down to f/8. That was an important addition to the feature set of the EOS-1D X.

However, it turned out that some EOS-1D X models are not center-point focusing using f/8, despite the firmware. Apparently this happened to EOS-1D Xs that were sent in for service and returned with a firmware update.

It’s easy to find out if your EOS-1D X is affected. Check the serial number, if the sixth digit is a 4 or 5, then open the battery compartment and look out for a white dot in the position shown in the pic below. If the small white dot is there, your camera is not affected.

Firmware Fix Announced For Speedlite AF Assist Beam Issue On EOS 5D Mark III and EOS-1D X

Speedlite AF Assist Beam Issue

Concerning the Speedlite AF assist beam issue occurring with Speedlites used with a Canon EOS 5D Mark III or Canon EOS-1D X, there will soon be a firmware fix. In the EOS forum at Canon USA, a forum moderator wrote:

Canon has confirmed that, depending upon the shooting conditions, it may take slightly longer for the EOS 5D Mark III and EOS-1D X digital SLR cameras to acquire focus when using the Speedlite’s AF Assist Beam, compared with that of the EOS 5D Mark II and EOS-1D Mark IV digital SLR cameras using the Speedlite’s AF Assist Beam. We are developing a firmware update to enhance the focusing feature for the EOS 5D Mark III and the EOS-1D X. The schedule for release of this firmware update will be announced shortly.

“Announced shortly” could mean in April, when Canon is set to release a firmware update for the EOS 5D Mark III. Don’t think they will release another one before.

EOS-1D X Firmware Update

Lots of firmware updates coming from Canon these days. After the firmware update for the Canon EOS-1D C, the EOS-1Ds III and EOS-1D IV, and the EOS-1D III, Canon released a firmware update for the Canon EOS-1D X (price & specs).

Details
Firmware Version 1.2.4 incorporates the following improvements and fixes:

1. Improves the speed of the camera’s acquisition of focus when using a Canon Speedlite’s AF-assist beam.
2. Reduces the time it takes to display the metering result on the LCD or Viewfinder when the meter has been activated.
3. Fixes a phenomenon in which a “Caution 02” message is unnecessarily recorded in the camera status log.
4. Fixes a phenomenon in which continuous shooting pauses when using a Canon Speedlite.
5. Fixes a phenomenon, when the Canon GP-E1 is attached, in which the GPS device settings are reset to default settings when the camera has been powered off.

Note: *This phenomenon occurs only with firmware Ver. 1.2.1. After changing the GPS device settings, please be sure to power off the camera before removing the battery. This will ensure that the camera’s GPS device settings will be saved.

Firmware Version 1.2.4 is for cameras with firmware version 1.2.1 or earlier. If your camera’s firmware is already Version 1.2.4, it is not necessary to update the firmware. When updating your camera’s firmware, please review the instructions thoroughly before you update the firmware.
The firmware update takes approximately seven minutes.

EOS-1D C Firmware EOS-1D C Firmware

A few days ago Canon announced a firmware update for the Canon EOS-1D C, which, among other fixes, brings 25fps at 4k. The firmware is not available by download, instead you have to take your EOS-1D C to an authorized Canon service center in order to get it on your camera. This is unusual.

The Phoblographer reports about users that are suggesting Canon doesn’t want the firmware to get in the hands of EOS-1D X owners. Why? Because the hardware of both cams is nearly (if not totally) the same and the EOS-1D C firmware could turn an EOS-1D X in an EOS-1D C, a higher end gear with a much heftier price tag ($11,999 vs the $6700 of the EOS-1D X). Btw, the EOS-1D X also got a firmware update in the last days.

The Phoblographer is currently investigating the issue with Canon.

The EOS-1D C is sold for $11,999 at the following shops: B&H and Adorama, and you can rent it here.

Canon Firmware Upgrades For The EOS-1D X And EOS-1D C Digital SLR Cameras Deliver Improved Creative Control And Convenience

Firmware Version 2 for the EOS-1D X is Based on Extensive User Input and Provides More Efficient Autofocus Performance in Low Light, Custom Controls, and Improved User-Programmed Functionality

MELVILLE, N.Y., October 22, 2013 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announces improvements in the functionality and convenient operation of the EOS-1D X Digital SLR camera and the EOS-1D C Digital SLR Cinema camera through new firmware scheduled to be available starting in January 2014 and November 2013, respectively. Firmware enhancements for the EOS-1D X Digital SLR camera are designed to provide photographers with greater creative freedom and speed, especially in sectors such as sports, wedding, nature/wildlife, and journalism, which often contain rapidly changing action, sometimes in low-light environments. Service enhancements for the EOS-1D C Digital SLR Cinema camera improve lens performance, lens status display, metadata storage, and audio recording.

“Canon constantly strives to provide our customers with advanced and innovative technology in our products,” noted Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A. “We understand the daily life of photographers, we listen closely to what they have to say, and we use their feedback in our constant efforts to improve existing products and develop new ones. The latest Canon firmware for the flagship EOS-1D X Digital SLR camera provides better automation to help photographers fine-tune how the camera operates moment-by-moment so users can concentrate on creativity and success. Filmmakers have also requested improved functionality for the EOS-1D C Digital SLR Cinema camera, and its new update delivers.”

Improved Operability for the EOS-1D X

Developed as the ultimate Canon EOS camera, the EOS-1D X Digital SLR is designed with foresight that enables its performance to be periodically improved with new firmware upgrades, helping to ensure maximum long-term value for owners and users of the camera. These improvements are engineered to support and advance the evolving creative needs and business imperatives of professional photographers and committed high-end amateurs. The features provided by firmware version 2 are designed for more efficient automation that takes the task of changing settings away from the “heat of the moment” and enables photographers to concentrate on creativity and obtaining valuable shots. Firmware version 2 upgrades and operability additions include a total of 10 features that are now new or improved:

  • AF Performance with Moving Subjects – For greater creative control, additional parameters have been added to AI Servo 2nd Image Priority, enabling users to adjust these settings for more accurate AF performance according to the situation at hand. Photographers can fine-tune the balance between prioritizing focus versus the framing rate for the second and subsequent shots in a burst.
  • Enhanced AI Servo AF Performance in Low Light Conditions – The AI Servo focusing algorithm has been improved to allow more time for light sampling during AF activation prior to shutter release, enhancing AF performance in low-light situations. Additionally, initial AF control is now based on the new “+2 focus priority” setting of AI Servo 2nd Image Priority, which has higher distance measurement capabilities under low-light conditions. Upon full depression of the shutter button, settings from AI Servo 1st Image Priority take over and then settings from AI Servo 2nd Image Priority are applied on any subsequent images in the burst. This increases the probability that the first image in a burst sequence will be as sharp as possible.
  • Improved Acceleration/Deceleration Tracking Parameters – To improve tracking performance of fast-moving subjects that fill the frame, additional parameters for acceleration/deceleration tracking in AI Servo AF have been added to provide photographers with more precise control when photographing rapidly moving subjects that accelerate or decelerate quickly or unexpectedly. In response to feedback from professional photographers, these new settings have been added to handle larger differences in speed (i.e., the rate of change in image magnification) compared to the previous firmware.
  • Selection of Initial AF Point While Shooting in 61-Point Auto Selection AF – This new option in the AF Menu provides more continuity when switching to 61-Point Auto Selection AF from any other AF Point Selection mode. The option maintains the AF point selected from the previous Selection mode as a starting point for 61-Point Auto Selection AF. It also maintains the ability to change to a pre-programmed AF point when changing the Selection mode. This time-saving option is designed to help eliminate the need to stop and think, and helps photographers to customize their individual shooting style.
  • AF Point Switching According to Camera Orientation – In addition to programming the EOS-1D X camera to automatically switch to a different AF point and area selection mode based on camera orientation, firmware version 2 adds the option of programming only the AF point according to camera orientation (horizontal, grip up and grip down). This new ability to select up to three different AF points according to camera orientation allows for greater customization of the camera to specific shooting styles.
  • Expanded Minimum Shutter Speed in Auto ISO – In response to user feedback, this improved functionality in Auto ISO enables photographers to select a minimum shutter speed as high as 1/8000th of a second to freeze moving subjects.
  • Exposure Compensation in Auto ISO with Manual Mode Set – This new function enables photographers to manually set a desired shutter speed and aperture, use Auto ISO to control the exposure, and use Exposure Compensation to adjust the exposure for challenging lighting conditions (e.g., a very dark or very bright background). This new function can be activated through the Quick Control Dial or by using the Main Dial while pressing the SET button.
  • Toggling Between Alternate Camera Settings – EOS-1D X camera users can now toggle between three groups of camera settings instantly by pressing the shutter button, AE Lock button [*] or the AF-ON button. Selectable settings that can now be assigned to the AE Lock and AF-ON buttons via Custom Controls include:
  • Currently selected AF point vs. pre-registered AF point
  • AI Servo AF configuration sets (Case 1 through Case 6)
  • One-Shot AF vs. AI Servo AF
  • Currently selected drive mode vs. 14 fps Super High Speed drive mode

With these new options, photographers can reconfigure their EOS-1D X camera on the fly, while keeping their eye on the viewfinder to maintain concentration on the shot they are trying to get. For example, the camera could be set up for One-Shot AF and single shot drive mode on the shutter button, AI Servo AF in Case 1 with high-speed continuous drive mode on the AE Lock button, and AI Servo AF in Case 4 with super-high-speed 14 fps continuous drive mode on the AF-ON button.

  • Same Exposure for New Aperture in Manual Mode – This new firmware feature provides users with the ability to maintain consistent exposure levels in Manual mode when the aperture changes, for example when a photographer shoots at maximum aperture with a variable-aperture lens (such as the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM telephoto zoom) or when using a lens equipped with built-in extender (such as the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4X). The feature gives users the option to have the camera adjust the shutter speed or the ISO to compensate for the aperture change.
  • Display Protected Images Only – Users can now page through protected images only via an option on the main dial. This feature already exists with rated images, and is an expansion of that capability.
Enhancements for the EOS-1D C

A versatile, self-contained 4K cinema camera as well as a robust still photography camera, the Canon EOS-1D C will also benefit from a new service update that further enhances the performance of this unique imaging device.

  • EF Lens Communication – The new service update for the EOS-1D C Digital SLR Cinema camera will enable Canon EF-mount Cinema lenses to store lens metadata in the video recorded by the camera. Furthermore, Canon EF-mount Cinema lenses will be supported by Peripheral Illumination and Chromatic Aberration Correction functions, helping to improve overall image quality [1].
  • Audio Recording – In response to user requests, audio on the EOS-1D C camera has also been enhanced. Currently audio recording is limited to a MIC input, but the forthcoming service update will permit selection of LINE or MIC input, allowing use of a wider variety of external audio sources.

Best Canon DSLRBest Canon DSLR

The folks over at reviewed.com made a guide to the best Canon DSLRs for various types of photographers. In short:

  • Best Canon DSLR for Beginners: Canon Rebel SL1 , excerpt:
    • From a feature perspective, the SL1 and the T5i are very similar. The T5i has the advantage of an articulating LCD that flips away from the body for framing at odd angles, shoots slightly faster (5 frames per second vs. 4fps with the SL1), and uses a slightly more advanced autofocus system. While these are differences, they’re not major, and we recommend saving the money and going with the SL1
  •  Best Canon DSLR for Video: Canon EOS 5D Mark III or Canon EOS 70D, excerpt:
    • For everyday consumers who just want a DSLR that will simply be a good video camera when necessary, the EOS 70D is the way to go. At $1,199.99 body-only, it’s cheaper than both the EOS 6D and the 5D Mark III. There’s a reason for that: it has a smaller APS-C image sensor, so video quality isn’t quite as good, especially in low light. The 70D does have one trick that no other camera offers, though: Dual Pixel autofocus. Dual Pixel AF is a revolutionary rethinking of how a DSLR focuses when shooting video, turning almost the entire sensor into one big AF unit. It’s fast, accurate, practically silent[...]
  • Best Canon DSLR for the Money: Rebel T4i/650D, excerpt:
    • If you’re in the market for a DSLR from Canon’s Rebel lineup, the Rebel T5i is currently the top of the line. Don’t buy it. The T5i is one of the least significant updates we’ve seen in recent memory, with no real upgrades over the Rebel T4i that it replaced. The major change? A mode dial that now turns a full 360° instead of stopping at either end. That’s pretty much it. Okay, the grip is now also made of a different rubber material that feels identical but doesn’t wear off as easily.
  • Best Canon DSLR for Advanced Shooters: Canon EOS 70D, excerpt:
    • Unlike the Rebel T5i, Canon really went back to the drawing board on this one, including the revolutionary Dual Pixel AF technology in the 70D. Dual Pixel AF is a drastic rethinking of how a DSLR focuses during live view and video recording, offering true Camcorder-esque focus performance for the first time in a DSLR. It’s remarkable. In addition, the 70D includes an excellent 98% coverage viewfinder, shoots continuously up to 7fps, has an articulated LCD, built-in WiFi, a secondary LCD on the top of the camera, and a 19-point (all cross-type) autofocus system. The 70D is Canon’s best high-end APS-C camera [...]
  • Best Canon DSLR For Professionals: Canon EOS 1D X, excerpt:
    • While it might seem obvious to go with Canon’s top shelf DSLR when recommending a professional-caliber camera, there’s really no doubt that the EOS 1D X [...] is the best option. The 1D X is a multimedia powerhouse built for the working professional, specifically sports, action, fashion, and news photographers. From a performance perspective the 1D X is the best camera in Canon’s lineup, with over 13 stops of dynamic range, continuous shooting up to 14 frames per second (12fps RAW+JPEG), and some of the best autofocus tracking that we’ve ever seen.

Be sure to read the whole guide over at reviewed.com. My latest acquisition is the Canon EOS 70D and folks that is an awesome piece of gear!

Some of the mentioned cameras have very good deals that are alive (more today deals here):

  • HOT: B&H has the Canon EOS 70D with EF-S 18-135mm IS STM and a 16GB memory card, the PIXMA Pro-100 printer with paper and a camera bag is on sale for $1249 (click here) after a $400 mail-in rebate.
  • Adorama has the Canon EOS 5D Mark III with Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L Image Stabilized Lens and the PIXMA Pro-100 photo printer for $3347 (click here) after checkout and mail-in rebate. You have to click “Buy Together and Save” and then add the Pixma Pro100 printer.

Canon EOS-1S High Megapixel DSLR

Not only camera specs and images are leaking now and then, but eventually also the mighty DXOMarks are handled as genuine rumors. And here they are: Canon EOS-1D X DXOMark leaked. For what ever this score is worth in real life, here are the (supposedly) leaked scores for the Canon EOS-1D X, yet not published on dxomark.com:

  • DxO score: 90
  • DR: 12.8
  • Color depth: 24.9 bits
  • ISO: 3296

Let’s make it short: below the Nikon D600 and D800.

Canon EOS-1D C vs EOS-1D X – More Than Just Firmware

0
0

Some time ago we reported a news saying that the only difference between the Canon EOS-1D X ($6,799 – click here for specs) and the Canon EOS 1D C ($12,999 – click here for specs) was the firmware and that the two cameras had the same hardware. Exactly the same hardware, and $7000 more to pay for the EOS-1D C and its Cinema features (4k recording). The information we reported (source: EOSHD) came from a Canon Europe product manager

Canon confirmed me today the 1D C 4K DSLR is a 1D X with a firmware update. Identical hardware. […] I also had a impromptu talk to a Canon Europe product manager who was very open and honest about Canon’s approach with this camera

The 1D C is a 1D X with a 4K firmware update. Canon’s man told me that the only hardware change was to do with the flash sync jack (or one of the other jacks if my exact memory fails me). So essentially the 1D X hardware – sensor, processor, everything – is capable of 4K video, 100%, no heat or bandwidth issues either.

But things are not as they appeared. Canon Rumors investigated further and it seems there is more than just firmware that differentiates the EOS-1D C from the EOS-1D X. While it wasn’t possible (so far) to find someone who agreed to open his or hers EOS-1D C and have a look inside, some more information came in about the EOS 1D C internals, saying that, yes, the CPU, the image sensor and the auto-focus system are the same as in the EOS 1D X, but there is «reworked circuitry and design to dissipate heat for the 4K recording». I guess the info came from someone at Canon. Sounds plausible, but does this legitimate the $7000 price difference between the two cameras? We will know for sure as soon as someone will open the camera. It’s a pity that Canon doesn’t release an official statement about this issue.

One of the reasons for the higher price tag of the EOS-1D C are taxes. In Europe, for instance, there are much higher import taxes to pay for the EOS-1D C than for the EOS-1D X. The reason is: the 1D C is classified as a video camera, hence the different tax tarrifs. Have you ever questioned why there is a 29 minutes limit for clips you record with your DSLR? For exactly the same reason. If a camera can record clips longer than 30 minutes it would be classified as a video camera and get a higer price because of the taxes.

Canon EOS-1D X DXOMarks Published

To whom it concerns, DXOMark published the scores of the Canon EOS-1D X. Although these figures will start the usual discussions, be aware that this is a purely engineering measure. It tells something about a sensor, seldom the whole story and never the real world performance of a camera. But these are just my two cents.

Read digitalcamerainfo's EOS-1D X review here. Canon EOS-1D X price check: Amazon, B&H, Adorama, Canon USA, Digitalrev, eBay

Scott Bourne and the staff at photofocus chose the EOS 5D Mark III as the camera of the year:

This year our team tested many cameras and one really stood out. It was the Canon 5D MK III. […] The 5D MK III is fast both in response time and frames-per-second (up to 6 fps.) It has much better chromatic aberration correction and it’s low-light performance is second to none.

Ultimately for our team, the selection boiled down to amazing low-light performance, super fast and accurate AF, premium build quality, and incredible DSLR film capabilities. If we had a nit it’s the price, but nothing is perfect.

Canon EOS-1D X Review (ephotozine)

[…]

The Canon EOS 1D X gives the best low light high ISO performance of any full frame Digital SLR yet! One of the biggest negatives about this camera is the price, with the Canon EOS 1D X being one of the most expensive full frame Digital SLRs available, however, for those seeking the ultimate in speed, and low light performance, the price will be justified, assuming you have the budget for it.

They list the following pros:

  • Exceptional high ISO performance
  • Excellent image quality
  • 2 year warranty offered on Canon Pro bodies
  • Extremely solid build quality
  • Large, bright optical viewfinder
  • Fastest shooting full frame DSLR available
  • Large bright optical viewfinder
  • Great 3.2inch screen
  • High speed focus

and cons:

  • Size, Weight
  • Expense (Nikon D4 cheaper)
  • Lacks in camera HDR of following models

The EOS-1D X got a “highly recommended” rating. Canon EOS-1D X price check: Amazon, B&H, Adorama, Canon USA, Digitalrev, eBay [via ephotozine]
